Matt Monro toured Australia a total of sixteen times and, much to the delight of his fans, he included many regional centres. His resonance with the Australian public is underscored by the fact that the only live cabaret video recording of Matt in existence was made in Melbourne in 1967. He unfortunately met his untimely death in 1985 at the very young age of 54, but not before leaving a catalogue of instantly recognisable hits. He is fondly remembered by most Australian retuirees who consider his music as having contributed in part, to the soundtrack of their generation. Matt’s career-making hit was the song Born Free from the movie of the same name.
While there will only ever be one Matt Monro, Michael Whittaker sensitively recreates his music with specially commissioned backing tracks and projected images to review his life and career, whilst providing an insight into how this unassuming singer became the international star he deserved to be.
